Retainers 101

How long do I need to wear my retainer?
The length of time you need to wear your retainer will depend on your individual needs and the recommendation of your orthodontist. In general, most people will need to wear their retainers for at least a year after completing their orthodontic treatment. However, some individuals may need to wear their retainers for a longer period of time to ensure the best possible results.
How often should I wear my retainer?
For the first few months after completing your orthodontic treatment, you should wear your retainers 24 hours a day. After that, you may be able to switch to wearing your retainer only at night. Every person's teeth are different, so our orthodontists will recommend how often you should wear retainers based on your teeth.
Can I eat with my retainer in?
We do not recommend eating with your retainer in place, as this can cause damage to the retainer and increase the risk of tooth decay. Always remember to remove your retainer before eating and brush your teeth before inserting them back in.
How do I clean my retainer?
You can clean your retainer by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap or toothpaste. Then gently brush your retainer to avoid damaging it.
What should I do if my retainer breaks or becomes damaged?
If your retainer breaks or becomes damaged, contact Idaho Orthodontics right away. We will assess the damages and determine if we can repair it or replace your retainers. If you wait too long to repair your retainer, your teeth may shift depending on the damage.
