Invisalign is just as it sounds—virtually invisible, removable braces that straighten teeth gradually over time. Let’s take a deeper look at how it works.

The Basics Of Invisalign™

Invisalign orthodontic treatment starts with an initial consultation, followed by collecting impressions and computer-generated images of your mouth with x-rays and photographs. These are used to develop clear aligners to change the position of your teeth.

Some patients may need some prep work on their teeth prior to wearing Invisalign for the first time. In some cases, small composite patches are applied to the teeth to help the Invisalign grip the surface of the teeth better.

Once your Invisalign is ready, you’ll come into the office for your first fitting. The Invisalign should feel tight when you first put it on. Your orthodontist may make adjustments if needed.

Over the coming weeks and months, expect to feel discomfort, aching, or sensitivity in your teeth. This is completely normal and indicates that the Invisalign is working.

You’ll change your Invisalign about every week or two to transition you to the next phase of movement for your smile.

Invisalign™ Vs. Traditional Braces

While traditional braces use wires and brackets to pull the teeth into a new position, Invisalign uses a series of molds that move your teeth into new positions over several months. The length of time for treatment with Invisalign is typically much shorter than with traditional metal braces.

Invisalign can be removed when needed, like to eat or brush your teeth. Keep in mind that for Invisalign to be effective, it should be worn for 20-22 hours each day.

The main differences between traditional braces and Invisalign is visibility, convenience, treatment time, and cost. Invisalign is generally more expensive than traditional braces, but not by much. And for many patients, the benefits are worth the slight additional cost.
